What to Expect During First Trimester Ultrasound
Ultrasounds are one of the best ways to track and be connected with the baby’s growth and development. These tests provide an incredible first glimpse at your little one and help ensure everything's okay by giving doctors important information about the progress and well-being of your fetus.
Your first-trimester ultrasound is one of the most exciting appointments you will experience. This is when you get to see your baby for the first time.At this ultrasound, you'll be able to watch as your baby's little heart begins to form and beat. You'll get an amazing glimpse into how the baby is developing, from head to toe.
Your doctor may use an abdominal ultrasound for this appointment, which involves using a transducer placed on your belly. An ultrasound gel is then spread over your abdomen to help transmit the sound waves and get a clear image of your baby.
If the ultrasound is too early in the first trimester, your baby may not be big enough to show a clear image. In that case, the doctor may suggest a Transvaginal Ultrasound, which is done by inserting a transducer into the vagina. This type of ultrasound is used more often because it can get a much clearer image of the baby at an earlier stage. The doctor will also give you a printout of your baby's image, known as a sonogram- the first real glimpse of your little one!
To ensure your experience is as positive and safe as possible, WHO recommends that expectant mothers:
Get 2-3 ultrasounds, one per trimester - extra scans can be performed when medically necessary.
Discuss any risks with their healthcare provider beforehand.
Please ensure the scan is performed by trained professionals following guidelines issued by their governing body or local health authority.
Ensure the unborn baby's safety by only getting clinically justified scans.
Ask questions if they don't understand something.
If you can bring someone else for support during this appointment, do so. Having another person there can add a whole new level of excitement and emotional reassurance during this special moment.
