Benefits of Knowing Your Birth Plan
It's no secret that labour can be unpredictable. In fact, you may have planned every detail of your birth down to the minute, but there's a good chance that things won't go exactly as you imagined.
One important part of your birth plan is reviewing it with your partner and medical team. They need to know your wishes, and you need to be comfortable with their understanding of how things will play out. After all, labour is a team effort!
The Benefits of Knowing Your Birth Plan
When you first created your birth plan, you undoubtedly put a lot of thought into it. You considered all of your options, weighed the pros and cons, and made the choices that were best for you and your baby.
Now that you're in labour, though, things may have changed. The contractions may be more intense than you expected, or the baby may decide to come sooner than you thought they would. In a situation like this, it's comforting to know that you have a backup plan—a plan that was made with flexibility in mind.
Here are a few tips for reviewing and adjusting your birth plan:
Keep in mind that your plans may change once you're in labour. Don't be afraid to go with the flow and make decisions as they come.
Be prepared for anything. No one can predict exactly how labour will go, so be ready for anything.
Anticipate that things may not go exactly as planned. Birth is a natural process, after all, and it isn't always possible to control every detail.
Talk to your doctor or midwife about any concerns you have or changes you'd like to make. They can help you figure out what's possible and what's not.
Be flexible and open-minded. Remember that having a baby is a miraculous event, and things may not go the way you expect them to. But that doesn't mean they won't be just as amazing.
Remember, this is your birth experience and it is just as important that you feel comfortable with whatever happens on the day. By thinking ahead and setting expectations for yourself and those around you in advance, you can help manage scenarios which require quick decision making when in labour.
