Working With Waiting: Understanding What is Holding Me Back-4

Every woman's journey through labour is different. For some women, the wait for labour to start can be unbearable. For others, the wait can be a time of peace and rest. The only thing that is certain is when the time comes, you will be ready.

Nevertheless, there are some emotional barriers that can prevent a woman from feeling ready for labour. These could be fear of the unknown, fear of pain, or fear of not being able to handle the experience. It is important to explore these fears and understand them. Only then can we begin to work through them and let them go.

Preparing the Mind, Body and Spirit for Labour

Trust is a key factor in readiness. A woman must trust herself, her body and her baby to get through labour. She must also trust her caregivers to support her during this time. Ultimately, it is up to the mother to decide when she is ready for labour.

Allowing ourselves to be open and honest with ourselves is an important part of this process. It's important to release any old stories, beliefs, or fears that are holding you back. For when you work with waiting, you are really being asked to surrender to the unknown. You can start this process by:

  • Do simple meditations and take deep breaths (breathe in until you feel that your lungs are full, exhale slowly from your mouth, like blowing out from a straw) to relax and open up your energy and your mind.

  • Yoga and other physical activities can also help to clear any blocks that may be present.

  • Spend time focusing on things that bring you joy and peace.

  • Use mantras and affirmations. Affirmations are powerful statements that can help to reprogramme your mind and create positive energy. Find one that resonates with you and repeat it before, during and after labour.

Focus on creating new stories and beliefs that will help you move forward with courage. Affirm to yourself that you can do this, that you are strong and capable. Labour is a normal, natural process—you're not alone in this.

Finally, remember that labour is not a linear process. Birth is always unpredictable and no two experiences are the same. Honor your intuition throughout the process and surround yourself with people who will support and encourage you. Trust your body to do the beautiful work nature gave it the ability to do. You are capable, you are powerful, and you can do this.
