Hair Care Tips Every Pregnant Woman Should Know

Growing a human is a feat of nature, and if you’re pregnant, your body is likely undergoing some changes.

You may have noticed some changes to your hair during pregnancy. While there's no single cause for how your hair is changing, there are a few key factors that come into play.

For starters, hormones oestrogen and androgen produced during pregnancy, influence the rate of hair growth and texture. Increased blood circulation in pregnancy, additionally, helps follicles get more nourishment, creating thicker, darker hair. As for texture, hormone changes can cause a shift in the levels of lipids and proteins in your scalp which can result in softer or curlier strands. Lastly, better metabolism due to pre natal vitamins can make your scalp healthier and stimulate growth.

Remember that in addition to this, your hair is also more vulnerable to damage from styling and grooming. Here are some tips to help you navigate the changing terrain of your hair while pregnant:

  • Eat a balanced diet: Make sure that you're getting enough nutrients through your food to support the health of your hair.

  • Avoid excess heat: You may be tempted to reach for the straightener or blow-dryer during pregnancy, but try to limit heat styling as much as possible. Heat damage can weaken the strands and make them more susceptible to breakage. Instead, opt for gentler styling methods like braiding and updos that require little more than a brush and some bobby pins.

  • Get regular trims: Regular trims help prevent split ends and allow healthy new growth to flourish. However, you don't need to overdo it; trims every 6–8 weeks should be enough to keep your locks looking their best!

  • Choose the right shampoo: A shampoo specifically designed for pregnant women can help moisturise and nourish your scalp and hair during this delicate time. Look for one that includes ingredients like oatmeal, honey, tea tree oil, biotin, and other natural extracts.

  • Take extra care when brushing: Your locks are more susceptible to breakage during pregnancy due to changes in its texture so take extra care when brushing it. Make sure you use a wide-tooth comb or brush with soft bristles so you don’t tug too hard as you work through any tangles. It’s also a good idea to brush downward from roots to ends rather than from top to bottom — this will help keep split ends at bay!

By following these simple tips, you’ll be able to enjoy healthy, beautiful locks throughout your pregnancy!
